Kendo

What is Kendo?

Kendo, or "the way of the sword", embodies the art of Japanese fencing developed from traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship known as kenjutsu.

In the past, Samurai used real swords. Obviously this was dangerous and as the Japanese society changed, so too did the method of practicing Kendo. Today these difficulties are overcome by using "swords" made of split bamboo called Shinai and extensive protective armour (Bogu), worn to protect specified target areas on the head body and hand. Kendoka also use wooden swords (Bokuto) to practice set forms known as Kata. Real swords or swords with a blunt edge, called kata-yo or habiki, may be used for a display of Kata on formal occasions.

Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging acivity that combines strong martial arts values with sporting like physical elements.
