Membership fees

Beginners course

The cost of the beginners course is $150, which includes the hire of shinai, NZ Kendo Federation joining fee, an instructional DVD and a 10% discount off a shinai from Christchurch Martial Arts Supplies.

Membership fees after the 12 week introduction

After the 12 week course has been completed, or for those who have done kendo before, the fee structure is as follows:

  • $30 per month for adults
  • $25 per month for school students (17 years old and under)
  • $5 per month for armour hire if required

Payment of membership fees

The easiest way for you to pay your membership fees is by internet banking. It is even better if you set up an automatic payment so that your fees are paid on time every three months.

The club's account details:

  • Sei Tou Ken Yu Kai Society
  • ANZ Bank (Shirley Branch)
  • Account Number: 11-8007-0416-814-00

Alternatively cash or cheque payments can be arranged. Please contact Alicia about this.

Whatever payment method you choose, please MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE 'REFERENCE' FIELD so that we know that you have paid, and also put the MONTHS THAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR IN THE 'PARTICULARS' FIELD.

Where membership fees go

The Sei Tou Ken Yu Kai Canterbury Kendo Club is entirely a non-profit club. All seniors and instructors teach voluntarily. Your membership fees will go towards the following:

  • Your subscription to the New Zealand Kendo Federation. This is very important, and it will allow you to attend national seminars and competitions. Attendance of these events is thoroughly recommended and will hugely accelerate your progress in Kendo. Being a member of the NZKF also means that you can take part in NZKF gradings (these include club gradings) and the grade you achieve will be internationally recognized.
  • Hire of the dojo and purchase of club armour, shinai etc.
  • Where appropriate, funding for national events, visiting sensei, and membership drives

We also do some fundraising to help with the club's expenses. Please remember to pay your membership fees on time; the club relies on your payment to cover its expenses.
