Canterbury Kendo Club Beginners Course

Kendo Beginners Course

This 12 week program has been developed in order to provide a thorough introduction to those interested in learning Kendo. It provides the beginning student with comprehensive resources designed to fast-track learning, with an instructional DVD and clear learning objectives and outcomes. The main part of the syllabus is based on "bokuto ni yoru Kendo waza keiko hou", otherwise known as "bokuto keiko hou". This is an initiative of the All Japan Kendo Federation to make the instruction and application of Kendo skills easier and safer for all levels of Kendoka. Another important aspect of this course is the emphasis placed on (Nihon Kendo) kata. Each participant of this course will be taught the physical movements of the first 3 kata, as well as the philosophical meanings.

Upon completion of the 12 weeks, the participant is expected to grade successfully to 6/7th Kyu, and thus be confident to continue with regular trainings. Each coach involved with this course has trained for many years and has been deemed very capable and trustworthy by the seniors of the Canterbury Kendo club to run safe and knowledgeable Kendo classes. This, mixed with a focus on enjoyment in participation, results in a well-balanced and beneficial beginners program for everyone!
